Tenets:
• The built environment should enhance the visitor experience without drawing
attention to itself.
• Simpler is better.
• If you are going to do something, do it right.
History:
White Box Builders was founded by Matthew McEnteggart to fulfill the exhibition needs for museums and galleries.
Since its’ founding WBB has expanded its’ service offerings to the retail and residential environments. While each field has unique needs, though sound design and quality construction remain core values.
Principal:
Matthew McEnteggart has been interested in the built environment and carpentry from a very early age and began his (in)formal carpentry education as a youngster by helping his father, an amateur but very skilled carpenter, with home projects.
Through out undergraduate studies and beyond, Matthew continued his education under Howard “Sky” Scharff at Sky Contracting in Bayside NY. While at Sky, Matthew learned a great deal about the construction industry and quickly rose to manage storefront operations and lead projects.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from University at Albany, Matthew joined the Metropolitan Opera Guild administrating the Creating Original Opera program; training teachers and teaching students to form production companies in order to write, compose, design, build, promote, perform, document and manage an original opera/musical theater production. All the while, continuing to work part time for Sky Contracting.
In 2002, Matthew returned to school to pursue advanced education in Arts Administration. While studying, Matthew was introduced to and had the opportunity to gain specific training in Exhibition Design with Oliver Hirsch. It was through this experience that a new professional path was realized, a path that combined Matthew’s loves of the built environment, carpentry and advancing the arts.
Upon Graduation with a Master’s in Arts Administration from NYU, Matthew participated in several exhibition projects for major museums, increasing knowledge and hands on experience before ultimately deciding to start White Box Builders.
